Alta Sierra is in the Sierra foothills north of Auburn off the Golden Chain Highway to the east on the south side of Grass Valley.

The layout is carved through unique and isolated oak and pine, tree lined corridors over hilly terrain with frequent doglegs, several water hazards, and sand bunkers mostly greenside. It's 6,595 yards from the back tees, 71.7/132, course/slope ratings with three shorter tees, designed by Bob Baldock and Jim Summers in 1964.
