Cleveland Heights is a municipal golf course south of downtown Lakeland between Florida Avenue and Bartow Road with 27 holes. It's an architecturally significant relic from the 1920s with 18 holes designed by William Flynn (Merion, Cascades, Shinnecock Hills). While the original routing is much the same, even after years of lack of attention to the original detail of the greens and bunkers, they still posses a number of Flynn's design features.
The course meanders over undulating terrain on the north shore of Little and Big John Lakes in a predominately natural setting save for the homes lining the exterior holes. The fairways are outlined by native trees with a variety of doglegs and compelling, risk/reward options. The greens tend to be modest, elevated from the playing surfaces, and well defended by sand bunkers. Additionally, the Lakes and their attendant ponds, wetlands, and canals come into play on multiple holes. Yardages, course/slope ratings from the three rotations off the back tees with three shorter tees: Azalea/Camelia-6,517 yards, 71.0/124; Azalea/Boganvillia-6,266 yards, 70.3/123; Boganvillia/Camelia-6,469 yards, 70.9/126.
