Desert Lakes is within a residential community on the south side of Alamogordo on US 54.

The course is in a scenic setting in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan desert bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains and to the west by White Sands National Monument. The front nine traverses fairways defined by trees while the backside is carved through desert terrain. It provides for water features on 11 holes and a generous amount of sand traps at the fairway landing zones and securing the large, modestly undulating greens. There's four tees from 5,136 yards to 6,575 yards off the back tees with the Blue tees playing to 6,198 yards, 68.1/119, course/slope ratings, redesigned by Williams/Gill.
