Newcastle has two 18 hole championship golf courses located southeast of Seattle off the I-405 in Newcastle to the east in a setting with impressive views of Lake Washington, Mt. Rainier, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, and the Seattle skyline.
Each layout is unique in its own way, but Coal Creek is the stronger of the two in terms of the course quality and challenge, while China Creek is more scenic and playable. Coal Creek is an open, links type of design with heavy fescue rough and mounded fairways. There's 300 feet of elevation change, an abundance of sand bunkers, and sloping, contoured greens. China Creek is parkland style in nature over slightly undulating fairways bordered by sand traps and minimal water hazards in play. The China Creek Course is 6,657 yards, par 71 from the back tees, 72.3/129, course/slope ratings with three shorter tees. The Coal Creek course is longer at 7,024 yards, 74.9/143, course/slope ratings from the back tees, both designed by Fred Couples and Robert E. Cupp.
