Honey Creek is about an hour north of Des Moines and due west of Ames near the Ledges State Park and the Des Moines River.

The golf course is a parkland design along broad fairways with stands of old growth hardwoods and tall fescue at the borders. It's a challenging layout over hilly and sloping, fairways with multiple water hazards and a myriad of sand trap guarding the landing zones and greens. It was designed by Brad Benz with five sets of tees from 4,957 yards to 6,808 yards, the Blue tees are 6,294 yards, 70.5/129, course/slope ratings.
