Lakewood is just north of Skowhegan on the west side of Wesserunsett Lake in Madison in the Kennebec Valley.

The golf course is a classic Maine woodland layout with a combination of narrow and broad, tree-lined fairways. There are a few doglegs. Otherwise, it's very straightforward with ponds or wetlands in play on 1/3 of the holes and sand bunkers, mostly around the greens, in addition to the occasional fairway. The original 9 holes were built in the 1920s by Alex Chisolm, the second nine by Phil Wogan in the mid-1990s with three sets of tees from 5,490 yards to 6,278 yards off the tips, 68.4/122, course/slope ratings.
