Legacy is on the southwest side of Mason City off 19th Street with homes bordering a couple of fairways, otherwise surrounded by farmland.

The layout is over level terrain along tree-lined fairways leading to modest, oval, or kidney-shaped greens. There are two ponds impacting play on multiple holes, and roughly 40 sand traps protecting the landing zones and greens. There are multiple tees from 4,700 to 6,500 yards; the green tees play to 6,003 yards, 69.6/122, course/slope ratings, originally designed by Tom Bendelow with a Kevin Norby renovation.
