Sierra Star is on the east side of Mammoth Mountain carved through the forest and a real estate development in Mammoth Lakes and is the highest golf course in California.

The course is a classic mountain layout along narrow, Jeffrey pine and red fir tree lined fairways bordered by sand bunkers, ponds, and wetlands in a scenic mountain setting at 8,000 feet above sea level. The holes tend to move slightly either left or right with a couple of severe doglegs and the greens are challenging with quick, undulating, and tiered surfaces. It plays to 6,708 yards, a par of 70, 71.0/133, course/slope ratings from the tips with four shorter tees, designed by Cal Olson in 1999.
