Sugar Mountain is a few miles south of Banner Elk off the Tynecastle Highway, 30 minutes southeast of Boone, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

While it's only an executive-level course with 9-par 3s, 8-par 4s, and a single par 5, it's at an elevation of 4,000 feet, and the scenery is stunning, especially in the fall. It's a parkland-style design along confining, tree-lined fairways with sand bunkers defending the greens of all shapes and sizes. The course was designed by Frank Duane in the 1970s, and from the back tees is only 4,560 yards with par at 64, 63.0/113, course/slope ratings with two shorter tees.
