The Pines is located on the Intracoastal Waterway, just 45 miles south of Norfolk in Elizabeth City.

The layout is a parkland-style design reminiscent of the Pinehurst area. It cruises through broad, pine-tree-lined fairways along multiple water hazards, with well-defended, modest, and raised greens surrounded by chipping/collection areas. It was designed by Tom Clark and is 6.682 yards from the tips, par 72, 72.8/135, course/slope ratings, and four shorter tees.
