Westport is on the west shore of Lake Champlain in the small village of Westport in a natural area without homes or development along the holes.
The golf course is a classic parkland layout over rolling hills and through tree-lined fairways. There's a pond and a stream in play and moderate use of sand bunkers along the fairways and defending the modest, relatively quick greens. The course plays to 7,038 yards from the back tees, 71.5/120, and course/slope ratings with three shorter tees. The course opened in 1900 as a 6-holer and was expanded to 9 holes by the greenskeeper Thomas Lee in the early part of the century. In 1928, Scot Thomas Winton designed the additional 9 holes, and the design remains intact today. Winton was also responsible for Sleepy Hollow in New York and the Congressional Blue Course in Washington, D.C.
