Westport is on the west shore of Lake Champlain in the small village of Westport in a natural area without homes or development along the holes.

The golf course is a classic parkland layout over rolling hills and through tree lined fairways. There's a pond and a stream in play and a moderate use of sand bunkers along the fairways and defending the modest, relatively quick greens. From the back tees the course plays to 7,038 yards, 71.5/120, course/slope ratings with three shorter tees. The course originally opened in 1900 as a 6 holer, expanded to 9 holes in the early part of the century by the greenskeeper Thomas Lee. In 1928, Scot Thomas Winton designed the additional 9 holes and the design remains intact today. Winton was also responsible for Sleepy Hollow in New York and the Congressional Blue Course in Washington D.C.
