Forest Dunes Golf Club

Forest Dunes is just south of Grayling off I-75 at Mi72 to the east with two 18 hole layouts.

Forest Dunes saunters through the deep, northern Michigan forest and is a combination links/parkland style design with fairways framed by bracken, wildflowers, and red pine on a former farm and orchard. Each hole is unique and isolated with most carved through the forest while the balance are wide open, framed by tall fescue and surrounded by waste bunkers. The finish is stunning, a 530 yard par 5 into the prevailing wind from an elevated tee atop a dune to a green set above Lake Ausable. There's a 19th Bye Hole, a par 3 over the lake to settle the match along with a spectacular clubhouse and practice facility. It was designed by Tom Weiskopf and can play to 7,116 yards, 75.2/146, course/slope ratings from the tips with four shorter tees.

The Loop, designed by Tom Doak, features essentially two distinct layouts using the same 18 greens but playing clockwise one day (Black routing) and counterclockwise the next (Red). It's over a level tract of land along broad, slightly undulating fescue lined fairways over a virtually treeless landscape. The layouts provide such a different look, most will have a difficult time remembering how a certain green played in the other direction the day before. There's constant variety with short, long, and mid-range par 3s 4s and 5s.

There's also the 10 hole Bootlegger short course designed by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns. It's a total of 1,135 yards with creatively designed greens which funnel balls toward the pins improving the possibilities for holes-in-one. A few of the tee shots offer the opportunity to plays the slopes rather than a direct shot at the hole, and the greens produce a variety of surfaces with many being bowl-shaped and some resembling catcher’s mitts or table-tops.
