Great Chebeague GC, the Native American word for island of many springs, is on Chebeague Island off the Maine coast northeast of Portland accessible by the ferry from Cousins Island.
The golf course skirts across an open setting with constant views of Casco Bay journeying along salt water inlets and great blue heron nesting grounds. It's a shot maker's delight with the wind always in play along the open fairways dotted with trees and a modest amount of sand bunkers mostly defending the basic greens. It plays to a par of 33 with the longest hole a two-shotter of 375 yards, the entire 9 holes maxing out at 2,230 yards, 61.8/102, course/slope ratings. The course originated in the 1920's and was designed by a couple of summer island residents, George P. Spalding and Bertrand R.T. Collins.
