Lakewood Club at Point Clear on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay has two superb 18 hole courses available to the guests at the Marriott Grand Hotel here, a classic old resort property once used as a Civil War hospital.
The Dogwood course is a traditional layout with huge oak tree lined fairways meandering around and along the marshes on fairly level terrain. It's the more challenging of the two as it's tighter off the tee and more target golf than the Azalea. It has tees from 4,522 yards to 7,063 yards, the white tees play to 5,885 yards, 67.5/115, course/slope ratings, an original Perry Maxwell design redesigned by Joe Lee, then later by Bobby Vaughan.
The Azalea course is literally lined with azalea bushes along the fairways and around the greens. It's a parkland design with water in play on half the holes including the island green at the 14th. There's five sets of tees from 4,725 yards to 7,504 yards, the white tees play to 6,112 yards, 68.5/117, course/slope ratings, a Perry Maxwell original design as well with a redesign by Ron Garl.
While not technically part of the RTJ Trail, the resort is owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama who owns the Trail, and is included as one of the Trail's resorts.
