The name "Gateway" is due to the proximity to Detroit Metro Airport as the course is off I-94 at Merriman Rd./Metro Airport Exit to the north.

The golf course tours along broad, mounded fairways bordered by stands of trees at the margins. Water is the dominant feature here with wetlands and ponds in play throughout and featuring an island green. There's a generous amount of sand bunkers as well sprinkled about the fairways and defending the generous greens. It plays to 6,721 yards, 71.9/128, course/slope ratings off the tips with three shorter tees, designed by Jerry Matthews.
