The name "Gateway" is due to the proximity to Detroit Metro Airport as the course is off I-94 at Merriman Rd./Metro Airport Exit to the north.

The golf course tours along broad, mounded fairways bordered by stands of trees at the margins. Water is the dominant feature here, with wetlands and ponds in play throughout and an island green. There are also generous amounts of sand bunkers sprinkled about the fairways and defending the generous greens. It plays to 6,721 yards, 71.9/128 course/slope ratings off the tips with three shorter tees, designed by Jerry Matthews.
