Newport National is on Aquidneck Island in Newport County just east of Newport in Middletown.

The golf course is a links style design on a roomy tract of land with native grasses bordering the fairways and views of Sakonnet Passage, the Atlantic, and Narragansett Bay throughout the round. The wind is usually a factor here and keeping with the spirit of links golf, there's just a couple of water hazards, but a variety of shapes and sizes of conventional and pot bunkers along the landing zones and greens. The bump and run shot is well rewarded here as most greens are of a generous size and open in the front. The course was designed by Arthur Hills with 4 teeing areas, the green tees play to 6,017 yards, 68.6/125, course/slope ratings.
