Kiawah Island is a real estate development which contains 5 championship golf courses 45 minutes south of Charleston. The most notable layout here is the Pete and Alice Dye designed Ocean Course which is hard on the Atlantic Ocean and designed specifically for the 1991 Ryder Cup. It was dubbed Looney Dunes after the Ryder Cup and was the setting for the Legend of Bagger Vance as well as the venue for the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championship.
The construction and design "lifted" the layout above the beach level so the fairways and greens are raised higher exacerbating the wind factor and includes 10 holes directly on the Atlantic. There's continued forced carries over marshes and waste bunkers to small, raised greens with sand bunkers and natural waste areas throughout. The course has one of the highest slope and course ratings in the US at 7,356 yards, 77.3/144, course/slope ratings from the tips with four shorter tees.
