Southern Pines is off US 1 at the Morganton exit to the east in Southern Pines east of Pinehurst.

The golf course is a Donald Ross original from 1906 that's been updated and restored over the years most recently by Kyle Franz. Like sister courses, Mid-Pines and Pine Needles it is carved through a pine tree forest along separate and isolated fairways over undulating terrain. Also, as with No. 2, the green complexes here are the course's main defense as they're crowned with false fronts, sloped, and undulating and sand bunkers positioned well below the green's surfaces. It's a short 6,268 yards from the back tees, but feels longer due to the elevation changes with a par of 70, 70.2/129 course and slope ratings with three shorter tees.
