Trout Lake is in the far Northwoods of Wisconsin, about an hour northwest of Rhinelander and 10 miles north of Minocqua.

The layout meanders along the north side of the Trout River over rolling topography and along broad, tree-lined fairways. There are several slight and dramatic doglegs, numerous ponds and the River in play, and sand bunkers disbursed about the landing zones and defending the small, oval greens. The course provides a diverse blend of holes and is a well-preserved gem from the 1920s. It is fairly short at 6,297 yards, 70.8/130, and has course/slope ratings from the tips with two shorter tees. Frank McDonald originally designed it, and later, it was redesigned by Charles Maddox.
