Grindstone Neck Golf Course, named for a nearby shipwreck loaded with grindstones, is a 9 hole layout located directly across Frenchman Bay from Bar Harbor in Winter Harbor and while only a few miles by boat is a 42 mile journey by car up and around the Bay.
The golf course's main attraction is the setting with the mountains of the Acadia National Park and Ironbound Island in the background, across the Desert Narrows to the west, and Sand Cove to the east simply stunning. The golf course is a rudimentary layout carved through a clearing in the deep woods with fairways bordered by rock outcroppings, natural forest, wildflowers, beaches, and stream beds leading the postage stamp sized greens. It was designed by Alex Handy in 1891 and plays to 3,095 yards from the men's tees with a 112 slope.
