The Presidio is 15 minutes from downtown San Francisco between the 101 and US 1 overlooking San Francisco, the Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge in a forested, park-like setting.
The golf course traverses hilly, Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine tree lined fairways producing constant odd lies. The fairways are marginally guarded by sand traps, but the modest, sloping and contoured greens are are well defended by deep sand bunkers. The weather's usually a factor here as it can be sunny and calm in downtown San Francisco or the South Bay, yet at the Presidio it's in the fog, drizzle, and wind. It's par 72, 6,422 yards, 71.7/136, course/slope ratings from the back tees with two shorter tees. The golf course was part of the Presidio U.S. Army Base until the mid-90s when it was decommissioned and opened to the public. It was originally designed by Robert Wood Johnstone in collaboration with Wiliam McEwan in 1910, and redesigned by the British firm of Fowler & Simpson.
