Interlochen is southwest of Traverse City on US 31/Honor Highway on a natural tract of forestland without homes or development along the holes.

The course is parkland style along white pine and oak tree, lined fairways over level terrain. It's a shot maker's course where accuracy is more useful over distance with narrow fairways, several water hazards and wetlands, and sand traps all adding to the challenge. It was designed by Hubert Morris and has three sets of tees from 5,158 yards at the front tees to 6,445 yards from the back tees, 70.2/125, course/slope ratings.
